Anyone from Delaware, DE
Hi There,
just wondering if there are any any expats working in or around Delaware? We're shortly going to be moving there to work for JPMorgan and we are wondering what parts of the state to avoid, or any recommendations for areas.
We have looked at a few rental communities on the web in Wilmington, Bear, Canterbury, Pike Creek?
Any helpful tips would be appreciated?
Thanks

Not much idea, except it's a good tax place for businesses.
Anyway, don't think it has come up all to much on BE, but the neighbouring states certainly have so you might find some info by searching. Also check out city-data.com for any specific info you might be looking for

The missus comes from there. Seems first choice is north or south of the canal. They all lived north but a lot have now moved south.

When we first moved to the states 5 years ago we lived in Delaware. You'll find that there is quite a community of Brits due to the large number of banks and multinational companies such as Du Pont and AstraZeneca who have brought people from the UK. Also you are not too far from Philly (although it can seem a world away) and there is a good population often found in the various bars watching the footy on a Saturday.
There are quite a lot of good areas in Delaware but as ever depends what you are looking for. And yes there is the North or South of the Canal debate. We went for north due to proximity to work and below the Canal has the nick name Lower Slower Delaware - but we know lots of people who live in Middletown, Smyrna and really enjoy it - its closer to the beach too but in the summer there can be travel problems as the whole of the state seems to move to the shoare.
If you have kids the school districts are not all that good and a lot of expats choose to move into Pennsylvania which is only 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Wilmington as the schools are excellent there - try Chadds Ford, Kennett Square, Unionville, Avondale, Landenburg - its a little more spacious but very suburban.
If you don't have kids but want to live in the suburbs, then I can recommend Pike Creek - its not as upscale or high dollar as neighbors Hockessin, Centerville & Greenville but is very pleasant and safe. If you are younger and want to do a little more partying, then Trolley Square just outside Wilmington seems to be the place to be. Lot of rentals for young professionals within walking distance of a number of bars and restaurant.
We moved into PA (Kennett) last year but still spend time in DE - shopping is tax free and this can make a big difference. If you need any further information feel free to PM us.

Re: Anyone from Delaware, DE
Good to see there are some brits/expats out there. I was scouring the web for info and was coming up short.
We (me,wife,3 kids) are aiming to move out in July and are looking for schools/houses in mid may on a scouting trip.
All the info I've had is that what Warrinton Wolf says is on the money for schools etc.
We are going to an open day at North Start Elementary in DE, but from what I've heard school funding in DE is not as good in PA which explains why most people in DE go private.
Anyone have any other input? Is this the best website for expats?

Re: Anyone from Delaware, DE
Criteria I'm afraid is vague at the moment.....
Have to say this looks like the best site I've found so far now I've done some more digging. I'm looking for up to date stuff on basics like how bills are paid (all on credit card and paid off from current account or direct debits?), the latest on how best to watch/record British TV, best times to go back to Blighty, any UK sports info.
Any recommendations welcome.
