Default Any recommedations for 20ft container move

Hi,

We're moving from the UK to New Hampshire in October. We have stuff which is essential but also a lot of furniture that whilst not essential would save us money when we get our new place. I know it's a calculation to be made, is what we are paying for the shipping worth it when we could just buy new there? I think it is because after contacting some companies it seems we have the option of half a 20ft container or a whole one. Well, half won't do so if we go for the full 20ft then we might as well pack in as much stuff as possible.

Has anyone had any great quotes/service? I know they are not always one and the same!

Many thanks

Thanks, just wondered if anyone had found a really good deal. Found one of your posts below, will check them out

Cheapest so far have been Excess International and Bournes (although Bournes have charges for different things that they add on top). I'm just waiting for a local company to come and quote me but I'm probably going to go with Excess, very impressed with their quote and they seem to cover everything I need.

Are you sure its half a 20', not a 40'? Because 20' ain't a whole lot, and families who pack and move "everything" from an average house often use a 40' container. We took about 90% of a 20' taking a queen bed and two twins, all of which we dismantled into boards and rails, plus a small drop-leaf dining table and chairs, and two wardrobes, one of which I was able to flatten. We took negligible electrical stuff, other than my hifi and a small fridge. There were just two of us, living in a small two-bed terraced house.

If I knew then what I know now I would not have brought the wardrobes.

I think with 20' Pulaski, we can fill it up and jettison the rest, if we got into 40' then cost would increase considerably and I really don't thing we would do it justice. Did you have many boxes? furniture-wise we have two chest of draws, 2 double beds a living room dresser, table and chairs. Those are the only items of furniture i'd really like to take.

Honestly, I'd skip the beds, unless you plan to return to the UK eventually. Getting bedding (unless you continue to buy in the UK), and replacement mattresses in the US is difficult, and in the cases of (custom) mattresses, more expensive than it needs to be.

We had many boxes, crockery and glasses soon fill a box because of all the packing materials. We also had a lots of books, magazines, video tapes, records, CDs, plus clothing, hand tools, and kitchenware. I think "all in" we had over 200 "items" (item = 1 box, 1 chair, 1 bundle of furniture parts, 1 box of CDs, etc.)

Think we'll find a good quote, get them in to have a look. None of the furniture is must keep but if we take what we can then it will reduce costs when we buy. Appreciate what you say though, a space can seem big but it's soon filled.

This post gives you some tips on how to find reputable removal companies, get quotes and compare them. http://britishexpats.com/forum/overs...ompany-800081/

There's also a few other useful resources over on our sub forum which might be of use.

Hope it helps!
