I live in Asheville, NC which is a great tourist spot up in the mountains. There is Biltomore house, which is the US's largest home, a bit like Waddesdon Manor in Oxfordshire in scale and beauty, with about 15,000 aces of wonderful countryside to explore. Add some great restaurants, a vibrant downtown which you can walk around and you will have a great time!

I don't live in Charlotte, but I was there pretty much every week during the last quarter of 2006 - and I was there again for a week back in March this year.
If you want to try a Brit pub, I have two to recommend - Big Ben and Sir Edmund Halleys. You can google both to get more details.
Enjoy the trip.
