Default Any Brits in Madison WI?

Hello everyone,

I'm a Brit married to a Yank and relocating to Madison, WI from London. Are there any other Brits in the area who'd be interested in getting together now and again?

My husband will be there from September and I'll be moving over there permanently early next year. I will be spending time out there before my final move, too.

I'm in town at the moment to visit friends.

I used to live in Madison and it's a great place. You will enjoy the culture and the people, you've made a good choice.

I still miss the coffee and the chat at the EVP coffee shop. Take a visit, it's worth it. The owner is one of the nicest people I've ever met.

I was in the store on Mineral point yesterday and the coffee is still good.

My gf went to UW Madison (she's from Wisconsin, we live in London), we were there last month for a wedding. We stayed at the Edgewater. I'd been there once before but was sick so didnt really enjoy it that much, but last month I absolutely loved it. It reminds me of Brighton....very liberal, tons of cool bars and stuff. We hope to move to the US one day in the next year or two. I dont think I could live in Madison, I'm from London and I just couldnt imagine living in a small town/city...but we want to live in Chicago so we are nice and close to Mad Town!

My review of Madison. I like it, but I don't think I could live there. Top capitol building and farmers market though.

did you go to state street brats or the uw union terrace? Officially you need a WI union card to get served at on the terrace but we didnt have to show ours once. it's such a cool relaxing spot. I also really like Qdoba on state street...I know Qdoba is a chain, but its really good!!

Why do you not think you could live there?

Thumbs up Re: Any Brits in Madison WI?

I'm not too far away, and, stay in Madison on a regular basis. I could be up for a meeting.....if it fits in with my schedule.

Jim.

Too many students! I like the ease of access and being able to walk around but it is very much geared up for students, at least from the limited time I spend there. I like the student thing up to a point because you get some interesting stores and environment but it went a little too far for me. I also am not a huge fan of the location. It's like you drive in no mans land and all of a sudden find this city, then you drive through no mans land again and these posh neighbourhoods just appear. It's also a little small for my personal taste.

Same reason as me....too many students and too small. I love the town and it's great to visit, but I wouldnt live there. Even my gf that went to college there and is from an even smaller town said that she probably wouldnt live there again after living in London for 2 years. Also, I dont mind admitting that I felt totally jealous for most of the time I was there, all these students having the time of their lives while I try not to think about going to work!!! Grrrrr!!!!

I’m from London too but I lived in Madison on and off for 8 years, I had a house on Hillcrest and there were no students there. My neighbors were salt of the earth good mid westerners and I miss the people more than anything, they're a decent bunch.
The issue with there being lots of students is not a problem. If you want to hang out with the student crowd you can if you don't want to you don't have to. There are plenty of places where the students don’t go so don’t be put off of Madison because it’s a student town. The fact that students are there give the place a vibrancy.
I can see if people go for a short visit they might have a different perspective but spending months at a time there in all seasons I think I have a true feel for the town. The only month of the year I don’t think is August, hot and humid and lots of bugs.
There’s lots of great places to eat and drink. There’s a good theatre plus if you really need the big city Chicago is only a few hours away.

I lived in no mans land for 3 years and used to go to Madison to shop and socialise. Was in a small town called Spring Green about 40 miles west on HW14.
Actually have the option of returning but this time round it will be only myself and my 11 year old son, were from a big town and my concern is being cut off in such a small place.

Hello....well I'm a Yank married to a Brit and we are living the Madison area (Middleton). We moved here in March due to a job relocation. I grew up a couple hours north of Madison and lived in Chicago for 14 years after high school and my husband is from Lowestoft, Suffolk. He's been in the US almost 3 years so I can understand how difficult the adjustment can be when you are so far from friends and family. Give us a shout if you have any questions
