Interesting thread. Years ago on British TV I saw an American documentary about a group of wagons travelling to California, it might have been called something like 'Tale of a wagon trail' or something similar. I have always wanted to see it again, has anyone heard of it or seen it? It was written from primary sources such as diaries and details what life was like and how harrowing the journey was. Have done a google on it but not come up with anything that looks like it might be the one.

You might be thinking of the wagon trails that went to Utah, to set up a mormon community. Try that.

Into The West sounds similar, but that was quite recent.

Not meaning to take a pot shot or something ... but frankly, when us "super-intelligent-know-it-all-Brits-lets-take-the-piss-out-of-Americans-for-their-lack-of-history" ... we forget one thing: NATIVE AMERICANS whose history goes way back before England (as in English England) ever existed. I am beginning to wonder why we so easily forget the NATIVE AMERICANS. Just where did corn come from - England? Nope. The Native Americans were growing crops before England came into being.

We have, I believe, 2 buildings in our town over 100 years old, so slim pickings really.
We're lucky enough to live in a historic neighbourhood: most of the houses are well over 100 years old - ours was built in 1878. Still has the original cherry wood panelling in the living room. My dad said it reminded him of Nelson's cabin on HMS Victory.

I just found it, sorry it is not entitled anything like 'Tale of a wagon trail' durr!

It is one of the American Experience films called 'The Donner Party'.
Well worth watching if it comes on tv, but be warned it is really harrowing there won't be a dry eye in the house, even my usually tough brother was crying
