American Food
There have been posts by people saying what British food they miss and I was just wondering are there any American foods that you can't get in the UK that you would miss if you went back to live in Britain?

Re: American Food
I've thought and thought and thought about this...
Simply put, no. |

Re: American Food
The only way I could know that, would be to live there for a while.

Re: American Food
Mexican. Only real native American food there is.
On a whole American food is crap, crap, crap, with a handful of exceptions. But most of the exceptions are derived from other countries foods. |

Ribs in BBQ sauce that fall off the bone.
Thats it. |
Re: American Food
List some good foods that don't have high fructose corn syrup in and I'll maybe think about putting that on the list as well.

Re: American Food
You're all liars who smuggle Pop Tarts in your suitcases when you go back home for visits because you couldn't stand a morning without them.

First, all the candy bars get smaller, then Cracker Jacks changes to shitty prizes and only has 1.15 peanuts in each box and now this.:frown: And I love how they market it as a good thing... |

Re: American Food
Mexican food in general
Chipotles and chipotle-flavoured stuff Red Robin 5-Alarm veggieburger Deep-fried pickles Plentiful, cheap blueberries Plentiful, cheap blueberry-flavoured stuff Eggplant grinders Gorgeously thin New York style plain cheese pizzas New York cheesecake too Breakfasts at diners (especially fried eggs, something that we Brits tend to murder back home) If it counts as food (and it does) - beer from many of the brilliant microbreweries |

Re: American Food
Italian Beef
Breakfast at a decent Pancake House Italian sausage Decent BBQ - ribs, brats, brisket etc |
Re: American Food
Decent mexican food - Good takeaway burritos especially
Almost any fruit and veg from our local farmers market (Cabrillo College in Aptos) - particularly : bunches of cheap and tasty basil (to make pesto sauce) heirloom tomatoes different asian salads and beans persimmons beautiful apples and oranges pasilla peppers Reasonably cheap source of fresh salmon and tuna - cheap enough to buy a whole fish to smoke it I can grow most of these (except persimmons) but never seem to have the same taste. I cant get pasilla peppers back here in the UK and they were the only ones that gave me the flavour needed to make a vegetarian version of chorizo (using tofu - dont scoff my tofu chorizo enchiladas were always the first to go at the local street party) |

Simply put, no. Shrimp, crawfish, catfish, po-boys, biscuits, rice and gravy, red beans and rice, fried chicken, gumbo, boudin, jambalaya. It's all good. The food in this part of Louisiana is WAY better than most of the food I ever ate in England. And it's pretty cheap too. |

Fries with cheese sauce, probably. And just generally food from a good, family run diner. Have lost a load of weight since being back, though. Because the fresh produce is better, and a ton cheaper. Don't get me wrong - I really do miss the US. A lot. But some things aren't as bad as I thought they would be. |

I'm not into all that much shell fish, but where we used to live in Maine, there was a place that did really good and cheap oysters, clams and muscles - the mother in law misses that about not visiting us there anymore :D |
Re: American Food
hehehe that's mussels Bob. I do like muscles though ;-)

Re: American Food
mmmm chocolate-covered pretzels
junior mints maple syrup maple sausages (that's what happens when you move to vermont: everything turns into maple and cheddar) ground turkey breakfast sandwiches Good chicken salad Philly cheese steaks (though I haven't had one since February) If I moved back to Argentina, rather than food, I'd miss the freedom I feel when eating in the US. Argentinians are so obsessed with being super thin (the average Argentine woman weighs 110lbs) that it feels like you have to apologize every time you put food in your mouth, unless it is a lettuce and tomato salad. |
