American Drinking Culture
Is it just me or is the attitude to alcohol here completely different than back in the uk?
growing up in scotland as an 18-20 year old our weekend focus was to go out and get as hammerd as humaly possible and then some .. it seems to me in the 8-9 times ive been over here that whilst some americans enjoy the same approach most prefer to drink less and create a nicer social enviorment. I much prefer the general attitude of people in bars over here .. less trouble and aggro but as a 22 year old scotsman sometimes i just wanna let loose
any expats in the ft lauderdale area intrested in having a mad night out or 2 in the next few weeks let me know

It's because everyone is packing a gun. If you get hammered and act like a yob, you might get shot.

Around here, they get pissed up just as much....but then you don't see them lurching around on the street because they're driving home.

I don't think it's because you're foreign, Patrick. I'd punch you if I got the chance, too.
You have to look at it from their perspective - momen are pretty hot.

Re: American Drinking Culture
It's a completely different drinking culture here than it is to the UK. Pubs traditionally closed up around 11pm in the UK. I think it has been ingrained on many UK citizens on a night out to drink as much as possible before booting out time (I was never privy to a 'lock in' ). There appears to me to be more of a laxidasical attitude in drink driving in the US (although i'm not sure the police see it that way!).

One thing to note about US bars -- the legal aging drinking age throughout the US is 21. When the general age of majority was reduced to 18 there was an upsurge in teenage drinking. It has now reverted to 21. It is a matter of state law. Technically, it still is. However, after many states had already reverted to 21, the Federal Government made the 21 year old drinking age a condition of obtaining Federal Highway funds.
Liquor sales in the US are generally highly regulated. Generally, a liquor license is generally a license to print money. Your question is about an on-site sales situation. However, my local 7-11 is one of the few that does not have an off-site sales license -- not even beer & wine. The ABC is highly disinclined to issue a new one in our area -- there are many as is. And when a business applies for a license, even to buy an existing license, a big notice has to be placed in the window and they are easily recognizable. The notice invites public comment. Whenever that 7-11 has put up the notice, the local public comments -- the concern mainly being that the off-site will really be on-site -- in the parking lot.
Bottom line -- one's individual perception of "culture" will often be from personal experience.
If you are 22, have you been "carded" yet?

I know it's not your manor, but did you hear whether anything ever came of CostCo's threat to sue WA, over the monopoly enjoyed by state owned liquor stores?
