Is it an atypical example? I started a nursing degree at 48. I'll be 52 when I graduate next year. I plan on doing a grad year at St Jude Hospital in Tennessee (if I can get in). However, I'm also a Canadian citizen so can get a TN visa and don't have to worry about sponsorship. My dad got his law degree at age 46 and went on to have a great career for the next 20 years working in employment and contracts law.

The OP asked if they were too old to retrain. The answer is simply "no". He is not too old to retrain. Is it worth his while to retrain in order to try to move to another country? That is another question.

For many professional careers he is too old to re-train.
There are exceptions of course but I'm not talking about the exceptions.

There are many people already trained/qualified for certain professions and can't find employment in those professions.

It is atypical for someone with no previous experience in those professions to change career in their 40's upwards and find employment in those professions.

Some are easier than others.
It depends how complex they are.
It depends if there's ageism.

It is, generally, not easy, without any work experience at all in that profession to change to a completely different profession and find lucrative employment.

Successful examples, while admirable, are not the norm and are therefore atypical.

The problem is once the OP has retrained he then has to work his way up the career ladder to a level that a U.S. company would be interested in....or a multinational would transfer him. By that time the oldest child will have aged out...maybe the younger one too.

And also the small matter of even finding a professional job at that age when he would be competing with younger, qualified, experienced, applicants.

May have missed it but what area are you looking to retrain in?

I think whatever will get him residence in Florida the fastest.
He's quite anxious whatever the route.

Nursing seems to be a popular idea but I don't know about the job outlook.

Trust me the UK is not a bed of roses and is getting worse year on year.
What exactly is so bad about the UK? (Honest question never been there.)

If you ask Canadians they say the same thing about their country, ask Americans and they say the same.

The running theme around the world for developed countries seems to be my country is just getting worse and worse.

They usually mean 'too many immigrants'.
