Does Customs INS require a round trip ticket for a K-1?
Looks like prices from the US to Moscow to the US are cheaper than Moscow US tickets.
Can I buy the cheaper and her just use the second leg???

The INS doesn't care, but the airline probably does. When I suggested wanting to do
the same trick at a travel agency once, the (independant) agent told me that the
airline would only honor the second leg of the ticket if the first leg had actually
been used. At least check this with your travel agent before trying it!

Frank is correct. Many airlines would cancel the whole ticket - if there is a noshow
on the first leg, especially on crowded routes/high seasons. And then, they will
charge a non-Apex one-way fare for the Russian Citizen. They may even offer to refund
the whole unused roundtrip ticket fare (minus that $100 service fee for "non
refundable tickets"). On low seasons and uncrowded routes, some airlines will take
the second leg coupon and let you fly. Not all of them.

My reply:
Michael,
If you must purchase a round trip ticket, pay the least, by all means. I
suggest using ticket consolidators or 'bucket shops.' For example,
PlanetTicket.com is excellent. If that doesn't work try the Association of
Special Fare Agents (http://www.asfa.com) for other contacts (there's one in
Scotland). I'd stay away from Travelocity, Travelzoo, Priceline, or Yahoo.
They're are essentially agents for the airlines and offer little in the way
of true discounts. An informative site on truly cheap airfares is
(http://www.travel-library.com/air-tr...olidators.html). Edward
Hasbrouck has written an excellent article titled, 'Airline Ticket
Consolidators and Bucket Shops FAQ,' and you'll find it at this site.

Michael,
It was pointed out to me that I made an error in my email to you. Please note changes
to inforamtion originally included. It is http://www.asfa.net, not com. Also, the
name is Association for Special Fare, not far, Agents (ASFA). I'll be more careful in
the future.

Michael -
Speaking as a former travel agent and not from the INS side of things here....
If you purchase a round trip ticket and only try to use the RETURN (second portion)
of the ticket, it will not work. What happens is when the person fails to check-in
for the first part of the flight, the rest of the ticket is then summarily cancelled.
Thus using the second portion ONLY won't work.
Now I realise that it is cheaper to get tickets there, but you CAN purchase a round
trip ticket and only use the FIRST portion of it. If you have no need of the return
and it is cancelled, who cares? Round trip, advance purchase tickets are almost
always cheaper than one ways as these are priced for business men with expense
accounts. Also, you may want to try a consolidator. Gordon and I found my last ticket
to drop from £1500 to only £380 for the same flight.
Again - the viewpoint from the airlines side only.
Hope that helps.
