With BA it's two bags each if you go at least premium economy( although the excess baggage fees in economy are far less than the normal cost to upgrade), at least it was going to Tampa. Also I recently used sendmybag.com for 2 large heavy suit cases.

Cabin of travel? Status with airline/alliance? Not enough info to answer.

We sent two metal airfreight trunks ahead using the same shipping company that sent our main shipment of furniture and household chattels. The cost was peanuts compared to the main shipment, which was 90% of a half (20ft) freight container.

Note most airlines allow up to 8 bags to go with you. The first two are free, and the others are charged as excess baggage, but it may be cost efficient to go this route (instead of taking them to a shipper, arranging all that, getting it delivered, etc). Just depends on what you are bringing.

For practical purposes also depends on the total number of bags per group. When I flew over here it was four of us with two bags each plus hand luggage, while I could have taken more on the plane getting 10 large cases to and from the airport would have been quite a challenge. Plus in my case the sendmybag.com rates where cheaper than the excess baggage ones.

When I was relocated to the USA, my company paid for a one-way Virgin Atlantic flight in Upper Class, and I made full use of the three 32kg suitcase baggage allowance. I could have got most of my luggage shipped in my air shipment but it was helpful to have more with me as soon as I first landed.

Exactly. Due to my husband's status with BA we got 12 cases/boxes on the flight free of charge.

Obviously so, because you never make a mistake, .... just like my wife.
And just like Mrs P, you don't hesitate to concoct some way to make it look like my fault!
You obviously edited your post too!
