Tbh, I haven't been to the doctor yet to try this out because I am still not sure if the info is correct or not.

That's great to hear. We haven't decided where to live permanently but it's a choice between NY and NJ. So if this means my dad would be eligible for medicaid after becoming an LPR without waiting 5 years - then HOORAY!
I'm reading it that way. Any objections?

In the link given re expanded medicaid it seemed as if both NJ and NY had expanded but that NJ was uncertain whether to keep the expanded status long term. Any further info on NJ other than in that link?

Complete coincidence I had new TV cable installed this afternoon (for dad, I don't watch TV and didn't even have a TV before dad got here) and just switched onto BBC World about half an hour ago. I caught out of the corner of my eye an ad for health insurance that said

if you're between the age of 55 and 85
35 cents per day
you can't be denied for pre existing conditions

OP may want to check them out too

cpdirect.com

Edit:
THis is what I got when i chose NJ as the state:
State: NJ Age: 78 Gender: M
Sorry! A quote is not available for your age in your state at this time

And if I choose NY, their year of birth options start at 1938

So theoretically I could complain to the FTC for misleading advertising.
Guaranteed cover 55 to 85 my a£$%

Yes, sort of.

ANYONE can participate in ACA, but only those people with incomes above the official poverty level will get subsidies. (If you have income more than about 4 times the poverty level you get no subsidies either).

They can't sign up before they move, what I was saying is that each year there is an enrollment period during which you can sign up and choose a plan. You can't change plans mid-year unless there is a qualifying life event so if your Dad becomes resident after the enrollment end date he can still sign up with an ACA plan for a part year.

I am looking into health care for a (recent) LPR couple age 68 & 76.
I find it all mind boggling and strictly for rocket scientists.
I had a quote for FL, in network Platinum, max copay, deductibles etc. of $4,000 and monthly premium of $1,984.
So looking at a max cost of $27.8K Phew

I understand there is income tax relief for healthcare costs if you earn less than around $62K

When I looked a Bronze plus paying for increased deductibles was less than Platinum.

$27,800 is not the maximum health care costs, it would be for the extent of treatment covered by the policy.

jmood and others, I am currently looking at options for my son through the exchanges and have found the people on the helpline to be helpful. I recommend laying out the situation to them and seeing what they come up with.

I would second that, they certainly have tried in my experience, I do have sympathy for them.

What is needed is an App, just need to wait for computing power to catch up.
