Default Advice on US job market for UK citizen (wife USC)

Hello people

I live in the North West, UK and my wife is from New York. I told her it was like New York here but without the good weather. She came here and is already looking for one way flights back 🤣🤣🤣.

I work as an employment lawyer here in the UK. Work wise, I am happy to try anything as long as it's half decent. I like helping others and have an interest in business. I don't want to be a lawyer in the usa. Hoping for a starting salary of 50k, which for new york isn't great, it's a start.

Any suggestions on careers guys?

Thanks

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure New York is one of the few states you can be a lawyer quite easily if you were a lawyer in the UK.

maybe look at paralegal roles, they are in the $35-70k / pa range and your legal experience should not hurt.

I agree, with the accent you could pull off a expert witness roll. Paralegal, hell what about a Private investigator? I can see new TV series already.
UK lawyer comes to the US and helps the unfortunates to get justice fighting on the streets of Manhattan as a PI

Human Resources type roles? You'll need to brush up on the very different legal situation, but I assume your experience as a Lawyer would be sought after.

Hey guys, I am loving these suggestions but ideally I want to stay away from law because I've realised I'm not too passionate about it anymore. I like the sound of private investigator 😎. I really hope I am able to find a role. I've applied a few places already but no luck yet. Wondering whether it is better just to go to NY and apply for roles once I'm there.

You're not likely to get any offers until such time as you have the spouse visa for the US which allows you to work.

You're likely right. It's just scary moving without a job secured.

Hey, she will look for a job and should be able to find one. We have some savings, but not too much as we just got married.

At least you could do some lawyering as a stop gap until something else comes along. Companies seem to prefer to hire people that are already in a job.

You're considering moving to the most expensive part of the US with, in your words, minimal savings and (most likely) no job secured.

If I were you I would be looking for something in your field to start off, and then go from there.

Also, you don't mention that the process for your visa has been started. If it hasn't, you do realize it is likely to take close to 2 years to get the visa secured at this point, right? Job hunting this far out seems irrelevant.
