Advice on schools in Marin County, CA
We are moving to San Francisco from the UK this summer and have been researching schools in Marin County where we plan to live (we have 3 children aged 11, 8 and 6). I think we have a fairly good idea on the process of applying but would really appreciate some feedback on any schools that are really good, not so good etc. Although my understanding is that one is allocated a school once the application is made, i.e. a preference for a specific school cannot be made, I would appreciate any knowledge or experience of specific schools. Mill Valley and Corte Madera look like good school districts ... is this the case? Thank you

The catchment area maps will likely be on the school district web sites.

A LOT of kids around here seem to be able to get permits to come over from a different district though, and you are allowed to put your child in a school local to where you work. Each school is different though.

California has pretty open school choice, allowing Intra-district (any school in the district) and Inter-district (other schools in the area). However, you'll still have a much better chance getting into the school you desire if you live nearby, so plan accordingly.
This is a pretty good rundown of the process.

A random aside: Marin County is an anti-vaccine hotbed of the USA. Lots of "personal exemption" kids there who haven't gotten all their jabs. As you can imagine, they also have higher than average rates of simple diseases like whooping cough and measles. I would not send my kids to school in California unless they were fully uptodate on their vaccinations given the breakdown in herd immunity.
