6 Strikes
#1
Well I just got my first warning from the A&TT. I see all sorts of advice about proxy servers and vpns which I don't really want to go through.
I was wondering what the alternatives are?
What I was interested in finding out was who is being targeted to get warnings? People who download a certain movie? or media from a certain channel/ firm, or is it just material from a certain country.
I would guess that I can continue as long as I keep to British TV that isn't on TV over here. For example, BBC stuff is ok as long as it doesn't appear on BBC America.
If anyone has some knowledge to share then I'd like to hear it.
For those who want to talk about morality or tell me to stop downloading -spare me -this thread is not for you.

The warning was for "Copyright Infringement" -no more details.
It would be interesting to know which downloads specifically triggered this alarm.

They are probably looking at the sites you are downloading from. And if you don't stop using those sites, they will cut off your internet. Happened to my dad when he was downloading bootlegged copies of movies.

There's no way to work around this other than masking your IP via VPN through a shell account located in a country that would stick two fingers up to a US court request, or to just not join public swarms.

Ah, OK. I've had a few of those from time to time from the cable company that provides my internet service. The e-mail warnings I get are forwards of the e-mails the content owners sent to the cable company, so I knew exactly what the source is.
I haven't had any such warnings for a long time now, so I must be behaving myself.

It's interesting that the warning is not that you have downloaded the material, but that you are UPLOADING it since Bittorrent has you as part of a swarm and you are effectively providing the illegal material to other people.
I'm pretty vocal about my hatred of this process. The industry basically makes it close on impossible to LEGALLY have movies in electronic format to watch on your schedule without either draconian "start and finish in X hours" rules or streaming only which counts out those of us in rural locations with piss poor internet and then beats you up for getting it via other methods, I'd happily pay for it if it was possible to do so since, ethically, I'd rather just pay a reasonable amount to the producers of the stuff. The music industry finally wized up and I happily pay for my music, when will the film industry come into the 21st century?
Personally I use a $15 per month sandbox hosted in Holland. It's dead easy to set up and you are completely bullet-proof then. Every so often the sandbox sendS me a copyright notice with a
attached and asks that I delete it (giving me time to FTP it down of course!)

What I meant was that the CAS or the "6 strike law" detection doesn't actually detect (and thus warn you about) downloading, only uploading.
It basically sniffs for packets that you UPLOAD to users in the torrent swarm that match the movie or music file or whatever.

I originally said that I got the strike for downloading -which I assumed I had.
On closer inspection the 'Alert' refers to file sharing. So I guess they could be tracking either or both -maybe they are only alerted by uploading as an earlier poster suggested.
I'm wondering whether the source of the problem is the T.D. site as I download most of my stuff from there (I thought that was a private tracker?) I'm not sure whether to avoid the site entirely or just download British stuff. There seems to be a hole in the market since thebox went offline...
