4th July

So what are you guys doing?

Going to any parades, fireworks, parties?

It seems to be becoming less of a spectacle around where I am...old town was going to cancel the parade but decided to keep it, but they aren't doing any fireworks.

Nothing is going on in my current area though...have to head a fair bit out to see any fireworks, but at least the towns that are doing it are staggering them, one tomorrow, a few on Saturday and Sunday with a couple on Monday.

Not many parades though, which is a shame as I always thought they were kind of fun, even if a little dorky.

Working. I have a 5am meeting (joys of working for a European company) so I'll treat it as a normal working day and bank it to take another time.

Considering it's going to be about 118 during the day this weekend here in Phoenix, which means probably 95+ at night, I'm not going out anywhere!

There's usually a bunch of events, but with the heat, I don't know how busy it will be. I never go to any of them, anyway.

Dh is working and I think Ds is too. So Dd and I will go to the clubhouse and swim and watch the local fire dept set off safe and sane fireworks, lame after seeing fireworks elsewhere but the kids love it.
We have so many fires around here I haven't been to a 4th at the pool yet where the fire dept actually finished setting off all the fireworks before getting called to a fire somewhere, usually a few parents finish setting them off.

Oh yeah, so how many folks are getting the time off? :D

The missus gets the Monday off, but she is working this weekend.

She'd rather of had this Friday off than the Monday though, so we could have taken advantage of one of these - http://highlandstreet.org/index.php?...d=79&Itemid=70

Probably the zoo....but I'm not driving a good 1.5 hours with the kids on my own...when it's going to be hot out

I will be staing home and trying to keep the puppers calm!! I hate 4th and New Years, poor animals :(

Also we have some family flying in so we will be just hanging out with them and catching up.

Got the day off though, so that is a lovely bonus!!

Re: 4th July

We used to set up shop early at Gasworks Park in Seattle, to get good specs for the fireworks, then found a different park, Magnusson Park, that looked across a lake (Lake Washington) to see other (Redmond/Kirkland/Bellvue) towns fireworks, much smaller crowds and nicer atmosphere. This year I think we will go to a small park on a hill that takes in a few displays too, that's what we did at new year and that was good.

My favorite 4th July was at Forks (the vampire town) they had stock car smash-up craziness.

Re: 4th July

We're going to our local Farmers Market on Saturday. Sunday it is CarmelFest with food, kids events, a talent show etc and on Monday there is a parade and fireworks in the evening. My OH had to work last 4th July but not this year so kids are excited he can come to the parade with us. Last year it was ridiculously hot and after 2 hours and no sign of the parade ending I took kids home before parade finished. There is going to be 2 beams from the World Trade Center going to be driven through town as part of the parade. They are eventually going to be used as part of a 9/11 memorial in Indianapolis.

Rather than losing a war, think of it as gaining an ex-colony.

I'll be doing the same thing I do EVERY US holiday, spending it with the wife's family making sure their brats don't damage my brats and hoping the day goes quickly whilst the wife and family all talk about the same things they do every year, memories of years ago. Her brothers will light fireworks and throw them at each other, the nephew's wife will treat her son as a slave and make him run around after her other 3 kids whilst those kids will attempt to terrorize and destroy things (hence my protective role with my own kids). I don't really treat it as a day off work, just a day doing a different job. One of these days we'll do something different and fun I swear.

The only good thing is that it's not at our house so at least we don't have to stay all day. Someone suggested it be held at our house though and I pointed out that this is a British house and we will not be celebrating losing a war here, the wife who doesn't cook and rarely cleans thinks that's a valid excuse.

3rd of July bbq at my son's, delicious food, a bit too much beer, but lots of fun. 4th of July celebration in the park, band concert, etc. Then pulled pork, corn on the cob, strawberry shortcake at my daughter's. And the city fireworks display to end the evening. It's Mr. Deeks first 4th of July in the states. I hope he finds it fun & festive. :)

Eldest son and family will come over for a cookout, then watch $20,000 firework display paid for by Comcast.

Not sure. The mysterious people who live in a secret location on the house opposite's land did ask if we wanted to go over because you can see the display at the high school from there. I was amazed and will see what transpires.

Staying home behind closed curtains - 13 years of at least one moron every July 4th saying " yeah we kicked your ass out of here" or words to that effect has dampened my enthusiam for the day greatly.

July 14th though - lashings of fine red wine ;)

Wasilla doesn't have a downtown but they still manage to clog the roads with a parade.

We are heading to a party on Saturday evening to and i quote "drink beer and blow shyt up" there will be fireworks but with no actual darkness their effect is a little lost.

Happy 4th !!

Playing outside the "compound" with the kids, chatting with a few other folks living in the area...basically everyone and this goes for probably half the state for that matter, will be going off to The Cape, for the weekend.

It's a house robbers paradise

Or celebrate being rescued by the French, because isn't that what happened to George Washington. He was down and beaten until the French rode up and rescued him.

Or is that a biased British version of history

It's pretty factual  They would have not gained independence without some outside help. McDonald's should have Frogs legs on the menu.

I always found that if you were Un american in any fashion you instantly got labelled as a Commie.

Our town is having fireworks. There was an open-air concert last night in the town center (dance/ music I think for the younger crowd). Not a huge party because the big county fair starts the next week.

I've been over there at the in-laws for the last 2 years so it's going to be a little strange being this side this year. Fantastic firework display over the town though and it's a great spectacle. The last 2 years has seen my (then future) father-in-law trying to give me some rather large fireworks to bring back with me to set off when I get here. Trying to explain airport security to him was quite amusing.

I've not had to suffer drunks as it's a dry county but a few people have had a pop but when I explain they're all descended from traitors and rich men who didn't want to pay their taxes they tend to look a little confused and leave it at that. :D

;)Just remind them that it was immigrants like you that got this country going. Oh, and 55( I think) out of the 56 who signed the Declaration of Independence were either born in Britain, or of British descent. The odd one was Finnish.

The constitution was null and void before the ink dried. It was written in haste in reflection of the tyrannical state the fore-bearers had fled not the state they were creating. Much that people like to think otherwise.

The Constitution is outdated as are the Amendments made to it.

As America lashes out at those around it as it has always done, What it denies is the decay and inhumanness within it.

So it's Capitalism or Suicide Bombing indaviduals is the new old cold war. Sorry but I did not do the old cold war for this new medium temp war.

America please implode.
