This makes the fireworks on the 4th problematic because we have to wait so long for the sun to go down and it's still hot. Living here I *want* the sun to go down earlier!

Must say getting dark early in the US was something to get used too, missed the long nights in Scotland where its still quite light at 10.30pm.

Here its a bit better still light at 9.30pm, its great as when OH comes in we can do stuff in the evening from outside projects etc to walks - love long evenings

Took me ages get used to the shorter daylight hours in summer...but I like the longer daylight hours we get in winter.

Englishmum...my sister who is a geography teacher didn't believe me when I told her we were on roughly the same latitude as Madrid.

Ours isn't bad, I guess we're pretty far north, 43 latitude.

I was really surprised to read about the longer hours of daylight in England, for the longest time I couldn't figure out why! It didn't dawn on me (ha ha) that your island could be so far north and not be frozen.

Speaking of higher latitudes, can you see the Northern Lights in the UK? Maybe too much light pollution. I saw them once, here in Michigan, faint but they were there. I think if we were any further south we wouldn't be able to see them.

In Northern England on a nice day it is normally light around 3 am and goes dark around 10.30 pm. However in mid-winter on a bad day it is dark until around 8.30 am and dark at 4.00 pm. In NJ in mid-winter it is usually sunny by 7 am and dark at 5 pm.

Another thing I noticed was the length of time it takes to get light and dark here...much quicker than the UK.

True. Actually it was very weird in Singapore.....it's pitch black and at around 7am it's as if someone has switched the light on! There is no twilight....at around 7pm it suddenly seems to go from daylight to pitch black in the space of a couple of minutes.

Just spoke to my spouse....he's in London (yet again) and he says it's only just gone dark - at 11pm.

I'm cheesed off...spent hours doing some gardening today and gave up on weeding and just sprayed some weedkiller. It's only effective if there is no rain for at least six hours. Of course 10 minutes after I've finished the sky went black and now we're having a heavy thunderstorm. Bah! (No chance of a decent sunset tonight methinks. Shame).
