Re: 21 and I want to take a giant flying leap
I've applied to attend a community college in VA and see where that gets me. If you want, I'll let you all know.

I'm probably first in line to say go for it, you're young and this will be an adventure....
but I'm also first in line to say 'try it out first and see if you like it.' This messageboard is a virtual encylopedia of false expectations, rose-colored glasses, and sobering reality. There are many things about the US that you don't expect and even the things that you do expect might actually freak you out when you arrive.
I often recommend this bulletin board to people wanting to come to the USA:
http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?board=68.0
It's a messageboard for expats--expat Americans living in the UK. It's a sobering read--you'll see how little things that you don't even think about are driving Americans absolutely crazy. And if you dig here in this messageboard, you'll see a long list of things about Americans (that American's hardly notice) that drive folks from the UK crazy. It's a good site to see how things around you are viewed by folks who 'aren't from here'--a position you'll soon be in.
You're 21, you're flexible and carefree. That's going to help a great deal. But 90 days in the global scheme of your life should be considered a wise investment.
Good luck with your choice.
