working while H1b in process
Hi, A company in the US has offered me employment but they are not happy that the H1b
takes so long because they need somebody right now. Is there any other visa or way to
begin working before getting the H1b approved? Thanks a lot Xavier

Yes, there is.
I, a UK citizen, was hired by a US company and could not start work for them in
Boston until the H1B was approved. However that only meant that I could not be
employed and payed by the US company. Fortunately they also had UK offices. I was
employed by the UK offices and came over to "work" - i.e. 'attend meetings and
training' in Boston on a three month visa waiver. When they waiver ran out, I left
the country and re-entered.
Where are you from? I know that not all countried are participants of the visa
waiver program.

Xavier,
Has your company looked into the Premium Processing? It only takes 14 days to receive
a response from the INS.
It is possible to enter under B-1 and transfer to H-1B based on the activities you
will be performing.
Check out the following links for additional info:

You worked illegally. You cannot work while you are visiting. Your visit was
ostensibly classified as "attend meetings, et al". But if you received salary or some
compensation for *work done in the USA*, then you worked illegally.

But I was not getting paid here, so the issue of working illegally comes down to
exactly what I was doing. i.e. attending meetings. It comes down to whether I am
performing tasks useful to this (US) office.
