Default Why Green Cards?

Why are PR cards (Resident Alien Cards)
called Green Cards?
Did they actually use to be green colored in the past?
Or does the "green" mean like a "green light" to
stay in the US?
Believe it or not this is a serious question.

And in the time it took you to ask the question here, you could
have searched on Google...

Thank you for searching and giving me the link.
But stating the obvious wasn't necessary since
99% of the queries posted in this NG can also be
answered by doing a google search.

An intelligent person in the group. Bravo.
As a "regular" myself in some other newsgroups for years, I discovered that
I enjoyed giving answers, maybe to be helpful, maybe to show off my own
knowledge,
whatever. Either way it was an enjoyable and entertaining activity for me.
But when I reached the point of giving a lecture about doing a google search
when giving an answer to some low-level question, in other words basically
telling
the poster that he was an idiot for asking and he should go look it up
himself,
I realized that I was spending waaaay too much time in usenet and I really
needed a break.

You realized incorrectly. It is much more valuable and useful
to tell someone how to find an answer for himself, or to
encourage him to actually do so if he already knows how, than
it is to give him the answer.

As some bright spark once said "give a man a fish and you feed
him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a
lifetime".

Teaching a man how to catch is own fish is really pointless when dealing
with
a man who already knows damn well how to catch his own fish but has also
learned to get others to fish for him. :P
