Default What's the process/requirements AFTER winning DV visa lottery?

Hi,

Can anyone give me some idea of what happens after you're informed of
winning the DV lottery?

E.g. what requirements do you have to meet to actually get a greencard -
e.g. assuming you don't already live in the US (and don't have a job offer
in US yet), do you have to prove that you have friends/family/sponsor in the
US, or prove that you have enough money to survive there until you get a
job, etc?

Or can you stay in your home country AFTER getting the greencard until you
get a job offer in the US?

Thanks a lot!!

You need to prove that you will not be a public burden. Usually, that would
be a combination of having enough money to survive, plus job skills and the
like. Of course you will also need to meet the statutory requirement of a
high school degree.

You can, but it is usually a very bad idea. For one, the immigrant visa is
only good for, I believe, four months. So you have to go to the USA at that
point at the very latest. You can then return *temporarily* to your home
country, but if it becomes a permanent move, you would lose your Green Card
again.

Besides, how do you expect to find a job in the US from your home country
anyway? You really need to be able to visit potential employers in person!

you have to prove that you will not become a public charge. Having friends/relatives helps, but to a degree.

Having great work experience and higher education helps.

Having money in the bank account, a job offer, property, or an affidavit of support are all huge pluses. ANd I mean - huge. In some eastern european countries, you cannot get a DV visa until you show either an affidavit of support or a job offer (a real one). No money in the bank is sufficient.

So, it all depends on your luck.

And how are you planning to find a job in the States, if you are out of the States? It's hard enough to find a job having a local address, but if your resume shows only foreign stuff, chances are nobody will be interested enough. Plus, in order to keep US residency, you have to actually reside in the US.
