my fiance and i would like to get married Sept 18 2002, but how do you know for sure
that you will have the visa by then. We just got engaged about 4 weeks ago and were
thinking of starting in Nov. How long does it take to get the visa? We heard three -
six months. if true should we wait till after Jan? it's hard to plan

And what service center will you be using. The answer to this question and Alvena's will help in assessing your timeline for the K-1. Each Service Center responses differently to I-129F's just as the US Consulates in various countries have different policies for the K-1, i.e. setting up provisional files, etc.
Also once the I-129F is approved at the Service Center you have four months in which to complete the K-1 portion. After approval of the K-1 your fiancee has 6 months in which to enter the US and activate the K-1. After entry you have 90 days in which you have to marry and file for adjustment of status.
So without knowing your service center or country, starting in January is not a bad idea at all.
