Kathy, I too live in NJ (Newark office) and had my fingerprints done Oct 31. All indications are that citizenship should be complete by summer of next year, may be a bit sooner. The official estimate I got from BCIS information hotline was about 300-365 days from date of original application to oath, but I get the feeling it is going a bit faster than that these days.

I live close to cherry hill as well, Is this the amount of time it
generally takes for a N-400 sent out from this area? about a year?

Anyone with faster experiences in this area? thanks

bobolat, could you please let us know when you get your interview letter? i'm guessing that BCIS has cleared a lot of backlog for the N400 and the actual wait times going forward will be less than the official estimates.

i applied in Sep'03, FP Oct '03, and hoping to travel on US passport by Aug '04. wish me luck!

The way I understand it is that Cherry Hill used to be lightning fast before (avg time quoted on some sites was 180-240 days for the whole N-400 process). Whereas Newark was always taking more than a year if not 2 yrs. Then, they included more counties in the Cherry Hill jurisdiction to ease the burden off of Newark. Now, they are both taking about a yr to process if not more. I think Newark is still taking longer judging from other posts.

Thank you bobolat and elb, you have convinced me that I shouldn't be too optimistic about N400 turnaround times through Newark!

Any reason why they make you wait so much for the oath? Whats the big deal, why can't they let you take the oath at the time of interview itself.

I was told it's "name check". I contacted my local congress representative but all they did it's just told me that I had to wait more and INS didn't know how much longer.
I went to Newark local office to inquire the status of my case after 5 months of waiting and they told me the same. The "name check" was not completed.
I met a couple of guys there at that day and they had been waiting for their oath for 6-7 months at that time (

It is a sad commentary that 180-240 days is considered "lightning fast" in this day and age and in this great country that I'm seeking citizenship of.

ekb, I don't even know what they mean by "name check". did you change your name or something?

Well...Mine is more than 2years under Cleveland district no word yet.
Finger print is expired. Wrote a letter to Service center for another appointment. Received a standard letter stating that finger print is approved when the interview date is available local office will inform.
I think may be Service center is expecting the local office to arrange for taking the finger prints again because it was the local office fault of not conducting the interviews promptly.

By the way at the end of the letter it was mentioned that on most of the receipts processing time is wrongly printed. Usually it should take 1 to 1.5 years. Still it can take more time depending on the load of the local office.

I heard after the interview some people are waiting for more than 10 months....and no oath letter yet. That means more than 3 years wait time.
