Default Waiting for I-751, need to travel outside USA

My wife entered on a K1 visa, and received a green card
in February 2001. In November 2002, we sent in the I-751
form.

We received the receipt notice from the INS. It said that
her alien card is extended 12 months - employment and
travel authorized.

Her green card expired in Feb 2003, and we haven't
received anything else on the I-751 processing.

If she wants to travel outside the USA, what does she
need to do ? Can we go to the local INS office, and get
a stamp in her passport ?

Has anyone ever travelled with a stamp in the passport
saying you are a permanent resident, as opposed to having
the actual green card ? Did the airline check-in clerk
give you any trouble ?

You will have no problem. Just carry the expired GC and the notice extending
it for one year. We just used that in Jan. 03 with no problem.

Good luck.

The notice and expired card should be enough. It won't cause a problem
with US Immigration on the return. However you might have a problem with
airline personnel in the city you are returning from. They might not
believe your wife has permission to return to the US.
For that reason, I would recommend getting the stamp if you can get it.
Some INS offices won't give it. We could only get San Jose, Calif
(Actually done in Salinas during an INS field trip) to give a 6 month
stamp from the date we asked , which I don't understand since the GC was
extended for a year beyond the date of the card. Government people are
strange.
