OK. What if it is an American Airlines flight from London to Miami, and a smaller American Airlines flight from Miami to Nassau?

You're missing the point... there is *no* guarantee that you'll be admitted to the Bahamas unless you're a Bahamian citizen. The airline certainly won't want to get stuck with you twice! You'll be sent back where you came from - because that's where you're a citizen or have some sort of permanent status.
