2) I can tell you what I know. My husband is in the Navy (he's a recruiter) and it becomes part of your life whether you want it or not.
Enlisted and Officer ranks are different. As an enlisted member you climb the enlisted ranking, starting from Seaman/Airman/Private (E1) up to E9 - Master Chief Petty Officer/Sergeant Major etc. I do not know how advancing rank would be any different in case of not being a citizen though.
3) Usually 4 years. After that you decide whether to leave the service or re-enlist.
Note that when you join the military as a PR you don't have the same options as a citizen might (job-wise) due to security restrictions. A recruiter also normally cannot guarantee you a specific job as this is determined later in the process of joining.
My husband occasionally writes on a military forum: http://usmilitary.about.com/mpboards.htm
It's pretty informative so you might wanna check that out.

Thanks so much. I was actually hoping you would respond to my post since you were so actively participating in this kind of debates before. Thanks again.

What high tech jobs does the USAF offer that the Navy doesn't?
Look at it this way..
The Air Force has computers. The Navy has computers
The Air Force has cryptologists.. So does the Navy
The Air Force has fighter Jets... So does the Navy (and the most
technological landings)
The Navy has nuclear powered ships.. What is the USAF equivalent?

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is each service has its negative and positive sides. The importnat thing is finding the one that appeals the most to you and your values (if you are considering joining the services). People are different.

I am a bit biased into thinking the US Navy has the best air force in
the country. It takes more skill to land on a carrier deck.
Until recently, I don't remember new stories about the USCG's role in
Iraq, but I recently saw a new report of someone getting killed in Iraq
that was in the CG. In my brief 5 year USN career, I met quite a few
Coast Guard people as they attended the same classes attended and taught.

Not every AF base has a golf course, just like every Army post doesn't
have ocean view condos and sailboats (for those who remember Private
Benjamin). I have never been assigned to a Naval Base that didn't have a
Golf Course there or at some other base in the area. I have seen some
good and bad AF and Navy bases.

I guess that I'm biased - I think that the Coast Guard has the best "air force!"
my hubby is flying helicopters (they land on carriers too! )
I was just kidding about the air force bases having golf courses! Just a little joke between everyone here at flight school

I don't think I ever saw a coastie jet due a carrier landing.

very true - i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree! what part of the Navy were you in? were you a pilot?
