Hi everybody.

Very reasonable prices. Expected a hell of a lot more!

I don't know how anyone could suggest this fee increase makes the H1B more favourable than the E3, considering the E3 dependents can work.
Just so you know, my employer doesn't pay any of my visa costs. Also, I don't have any dependents, so H-1b would actually be quite workable for me.

There's a situation for everything

That's a bit stupid. If I'm going to go overseas to work for someone, they can definitely pay for the visa!

In any case, if you want a H1 visa, go get one. For the other 99.9% of us, E3 is still much cheaper and easier.

There's a lot that's stupid about the academic career path. Probably not the place to say it, but I don't even want to be in America - it's just there simply aren't the kind of junior research positions I need in Oz

As I said previously, yes, I will suck it up and pay. It has just been a feat of incredibly bad timing: I'm about to leave (but not before the 4th ), so all decisions and paperwork are already done. If I had to decide now, I may choose differently...

When your initial E-3 will be up in 2 years, you can still convince the university to switch to a H1-B instead. However, to me, the most unfavorable part of H1-B is the max duration of 6 years. At a lot of academic places, they may want to evaluate you for a period of time (especially as junior faculty), before they're willing to offer a more permanent position and green card sponsorship. I certainly wouldn't wanna hit the 6 years limit of H1-B before I can be sure the employer will sponsor EB.
