Default Travelling with British passport and green card

Hello,

I have a British passport and live in America with a green card. I am off to Australia next week and have just realised I only have five months before my passport runs out. I know Australia will allow me entry but will I have a problem re-entering the US as I have less than six months left? Or can I enter on my green card?

Thank you in advance

You can enter using your green card.

Your passport is a valid travel document right up to the day it expires.

The six month requirement is irrelevant when you have a green card.

It is apparently, and reportedly (here on BE), possible to enter the US using only your green card.

True... but you'll need a passport to board the plane!

I entered the US with only 2 weeks left on my UK PP when I had a GC. So no...there will be no problem.

Fab! Thank you.

I can enjoy my trip knowing I'll be allowed by into the US.

I'm sure you'll be fine but, technically speaking, green card holders have no automatic right to enter the US. They can be refused entry for several reasons. So you can't actually know that you will be allowed back into the US - not until you become a US citizen.

When I got approved for Global Entry, I was advised by the TSA agent to use *only* my Green Card at the kiosk, and that my passport was used only to verify my identity (when applying). Ironically, everything I've read on the internet suggests that the kiosks are notoriously bad at reading Green cards. Will be fun to find out when I travel this summer(!).

As long as you're coming direct and not transiting through any one of the many countries that insist on 6 months + remaining in your passport.

I got taught a trick by a TSA agent, card with the three rows of numbers/ letter face down and towards back of machine. Push card to back of glass, then slide the card towards you just a very small amount, and for me it reads first time every time now.

Thanks for this, I normally enter the card in manually. This trip worked perfectly.

Actually, this is not quite true.

The most the CBP can do to attempt to stop LPRs entering at the POE is present them before an immigration judge to remove their LPR status. The CBP has no powers to remove your (LPR) status.

Indeed, people foolishly signing away their own LPR status was how the CBP managed to deport LPRs under the initial idiot Executive order targeting certain countries. If they had stood firm, the CBP could do nothing more other than present them to an IJ.

It's been hit and miss for me with my I-551. Personally I find it quicker to just look up your information via your Alien number, which is one of the options available on the GE kiosks.

I didn't say anything about CBP. I said that LPR's can be deemed inadmissible.
