Travel to Bahamas with expired H1B

I am planning to go on a cruise to Bahamas for three days next weeks but my old H1B
visa expired already. I do have a new I-797 approval notice and a valid I94. Could I
just use the I-797 approval notice and the I94 for re-entry like people re-entry from
Canada and Mexico. I do remember there is some information on the INS web site law
book section but I can't find it anymore.
Help please! Thanks Simon

No. You will have to get a new H-1B visa stamp before you re-enter the U.S.
You could use automatic visa revalidation for a trip to the Bahamas if you held F or
J status. See http://www.wright.edu/academics/inte.../autovisa.html; note
particularly the comments on "adjacent islands" for F and J holders.
