Hi;

My wife will be filing for "Removal of conditions" this year. We expect no problems
with this, but have a question: If we want to return to China for a long-term stay,
how does this affect her status? I know that during the conditional resident phase,
there's a 6-month limit on stays out of the country, but I haven't seen anything
about the Permanent Resident rules that mentions terms of residency.

Anybody know?

Thanks! Sam

A year or more requires a re-entry permit (I-131) which should be applied for prior to leaving the US.

Also note that long stays outside of the US will interfer with the time count towards naturalization qualification. You can read about that on the instructions for the N-400.

It applies to permanent resident too. There is no difference between Conditional and
Permanent residence!

With the permanent resident permit you may leave the United States for 1 year. You
may leave for a longer period of time, but I think you will have to file some
paperwork before you go so that you have no problems at re-entry.

Further, the time you spend abroad after this 1 year does not count for getting the
U.S. Citizenship for instance, so if you want a U.S. Passport, you will need to take
this into consideration.
