Thank you.
Be careful on this. I don't know much about this beyond my own experience but when I went to the social security office to enquire about applying for retirement I took my US passport with me and if I remember correctly they saw it and took a copy.

I still have the leaflet and it says:

Be sure to have these items handy: Your S.S. number,.......etc.

In addition to the info listed above, you will need-
* Your military discharge papers if you had military service
* Your spouse's birth cert. and........if.......she is applying for benefits
* Proof of US citizenship or lawful immigration status if you were not born in
the United States

(The title of the leaflet is: "Thinking of retiring? Consider your options". You can look- maybe it's on the internet.)

It may be best if you don't give up your green card and deal with your social security.

Keep in mind that the card is proof of status... it's not the status itself. Even if he has the card, his status was likely abandoned ages ago. Besides, he's no longer in the US.

You can't provide proof of something you no longer have! Notice that it says proof of status... not proof you have a green card.

I'm not saying you're wrong - but pamphlets and similar literature are written to cover the most common situations... which this, clearly, is not.
