Default Syrian Visa info?

I have a girl friend from Syria I've been talking to
on the Internet since January 2001.
We've exchanged many pictures, gifts, stories, talked
and discussed things on almost a daily basis for 2 1/2
years now. And we sincerly want to meet each other.

She/I would like to visit me in the U.S. for 1 - 2
months to see if we could be right for marriage one day.
All her expenses while staying here would be taken care
of by me, including 1/2 reimbursement of her roundtrip
airfare.
Then she would return to Syria to continue her studies
for 2 more years until she graduates from University, or
stay in Syria, depending upon our compatibility.

Things being the way they are with Syria and the U.S.
at the moment, I wonder what her chances of visiting are?

Besides a letter of invitation that I will write her
and have noterized to give to her interviewer, is there
anything else I could do to make her chances better?

Thanks for any help.

Let's approach this from a slightly different angle. I would suggest we
start out by looking at what the issues will be that she will face when
coming to the USA.

As I see it, there are two primary issues.

The first one is the obvious one you identified: the current tensions
between the US and the muddle east. The only real problem here is that it
may simply take a very long time for her to get a visa. But it likely
won't be a major problem in itself.

The second issue is that with the situation you describe, the USA
consulate will suspect that she plans to immigrate to the US and remain
here. The fact that she plans to return to University will help
tremendously if she can convince the consular officer that she really does
plan to return.

Avoid a letter of invitation, mentioning the expenses, etc. if you can. On
the one hand, it is true that finances make a difference, but only if she
is really poor. On the other hand, though, you paying for her expenses,
airfare etc. would strongly suggest that she indeed plans on staying in
the USA, and thus endanger her getting a visa.

By the way, do plan on meeting her a second time. Once the time for
marriage comes, you will apply for a fiance visa. A fiance visa requires
that you have met in person in the past two years - and with your
timeline, it seems that this may not happen.

Thank you Ingo. Judging by the amount of posts here, you've been
extremely helpful to many people besides myself.

I guess the key then is to convince the U.S. consulate that she plans
on returning to continue her studies.....which is exactly what we
planned for anyway. And we will stick to our plan.
Any ideas on what the U.S. Consulate would deem adequate proof from
her or me for her returning to continue her studies? Would a letter
from her parents, University or place of employment be helpful?

Yes, if we get along well, we plan to meet again to be married.
I will relay her the timeline of 2 years for a fiance visa, so we keep
that mind.

Thanks again Ingo, you've been very helpful.

Trying to. But quantity doesn't have to mean quality (I hope it does for
my posts, though!)

Place of employment is the best of these. Transcripts with good grades,
extracurricular activities etc. to show that she is serious about her
studies are also a good idea. The more the better.

Good luck!
