Default Surrender I-131 (AP) on departure or re-entry?

Hi,

I received my Advance Parole documents and will be traveling to Canada
in a week. There are 3 copies of the document.

Could someone tell me if I am supposed to surrender one copy to the
immigration official at the border as I am DEPARTING the U.S., or do I
simply show the documents upon RE-ENTRY into the U.S.? I will be
traveling across the Ambassador Bridge (Windsor-Detroit border
crossing).

Thank you in advance,
at

Since you are traveling by car there is nothing for you to give the Canadian inspectors other than your passport. They might ask for more documentation, and I've been told they do not have the right to ask, for fear that you will not be allowed back into the US when you want to return.

So have both your passport and your A/P handy.

When you return to the US, you will give your passport and A/P to the US agent. Do not, and I repeat, do not do what some people have done and just give them a state license and hope to breeze through without going to secondary. In your instance you need to have the A/P processed by secondary. They will tell you to park and then you will go to the inspection counter where they will place several I-94's on the A/P and possibly one in your passport. You will be paroled into the US "indef". Do not let this date fool you. The A/P is not good for an indefinite period of time only your parole is. The A/P is only valid for the dates written on it by the USCIS. They usually retain one copy of the A/P and type the information into the database and return the others to you and you are free to go. There is no charge for the I-94.

I've been with my husband twice when he has had to activate his A/P while waiting for the 21 months to be over for the AOS to be finalized. It is a very easy process and once it is activated, if you travel back to Canada while the A/P is still valid, it is only a matter of showing it the next time. There won't be any secondary for subsequent visits on an activated A/P

Default Thanks Rete! Re: Surrender I-131 (AP) on departure or re-entry?

Rete,
The process went just as you described, and it was helpful to know how
things would proceed ahead of time.

Thanks!
