Default Study visa / postgraduate study?

Hi there,

I am just finishing my degree in the UK and i want to do a postgraduate in teaching, and wouldnt mind looking at doing this in the US as we would like to eventually move there.

I cant find any info online though, are postgraduates called something else in the US?

Also does anyone know how to go around applying, and what the fees are?

And finally, i would like my fiancee to come with me- if i got the student visa could he apply for a finacee one or do finacee visas only apply to fiancess of american citizens?

hope all this makes sense, just looking at our options at the moment!

thanks very much in advance for any help.

On the assumption that you have the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree, look for a "graduate" program... perhaps some place offering an MAT.

No idea about the application, but be prepared to pay international student fees... usually in the 3-4 thousand US$ per semester range.

Only US citizens can petition for a fiancee visa. Your fiancee will have to apply for and be granted his own visa... not sure what he's qualified for though.

If you marry your fiance, he can come on an F2 dependent visa if you come on an F1 student visa. But he won't be able to work or go to school.

F1 Visa...each uni have their own requirements, you'll have to pay international rates, and cost of application could be waived, or cost between $50-100 a pop...each place would probably charge between $15-100K a year depending on the course and institution...and as a F1 visa, you won't be allowed to work in the first semester, and then after that, only part time on campus.

partner would either have to be your married spouse to get F2, or get a visa in own right.

WOW ok i wasnt prepared for that kind of money...
Right i thought i'd ask anyway...

We really wanna try to move to USA and after doing TONS of research i can see its very very hard, so i when i had this study idea last night i thought i'd look into it, never mind

I guess it would be better to do my postgraduate here in englad and try after that(its 3k here)-
can i ask while we are on the subject, would having more and more qualifications help us get a visa or is it pointless as the only way in is a sponsorship? (i intend to do my postgrad on education).

Also, my boyfriend works a company in London which is owned by an American company, if he enquired about sponsorship/transfer, could this damage his current role? (maybe i should start a new thread for this?).

thanks all!!

Company transfer would be the way to go...if your married, he could get an L1, and you could get an L2, and then apply for EAD to allow work yourself.

He'd have to either be management or have specialist skills, and had to have worked there for at least a year.

Having more qualifications is a good thing, especially if you came on an H1B visa, would give you better options later.
