Steps to sponsor mother for green card
I am a US citizen and want to find out the forms and procedures for
sponsoring my mother for green card. The only info I have found after
some search is I-864 Affidavit of support. Is this the only form I
need to file?
In addition would like to get info on:
a) Is it better to get a lawyer or do it by oneself?
b) After an application is filed for green card, can my mother travel
to the US? She currently has a valid 10 year tourist visa.
thanks

Hell no!
If she is in the US you need the i-130, i-485 and supporting documentation,
which is listed on the forms. If she's out of the US you can file form
i-130 and supporting documentation. When that is approved she will be able
to apply at the consulate in her country for an immigrant visa.

Up to you. I generally view hiring a lawyer as being superfluous unless
you're in trouble or your situation has complications.

Not generally advisable. She could be turned back based on the fact that
she has immigrant intent. She could come before you start the process but
since you are an immediate relative she could be turned back too.
