Default Ssn Vs Ead

Can anyone please advise me if its possible to obtain a SSN before applying for EAD?

Is this possible or will it cause any problems along the way. I know the EAD is likely to take 90 days or so to be approved so working right now is not an issue really but would like to obtain a SSN as soon as possible if its possible.

Your thoughts & ideas greatly appreciated.

Regards

Apply while under K1 visa and before marriage if possible.

Hi All,

Depends on the individual's status. K-1 yes you can be assigned a work
authorized SSN without an EAD. K-2/3/4 no.

Take care,

Mike

P.S. I heard today that the nonwork reason of getting an SSN for a driver's
license probably will be gone again sometime in August.

So currently Shepslady may be able to bet a non-work authorised SSN?

I applied for SSN before EAD (before I even got married too). The officer had no problem with processing my application. But you will get the one with the 'valid for work only with INS authorization' mark.

It's handy to apply for SSN ASAP if your #1 priority is to get your U.S. drivers liscence.

AFAIK, you can get a SSN anyway - but it is marked as OK to work with INS
(BCIS) authoriation - which is where the EAD or the stamp comes in.

Hi All,

Possibly, but status still needs to be verified, so you might as well
get the EAD and apply for a work authorized SSN. If you apply for the
nonwork authorized SSN and then get the EAD that will probably need to
be verified, so you wait again. About the only advantage to getting
the nonwork SSN first is that you have an SSN. Not going to get you
working faster.

For a nonwork authorized you need a statement from the DMV in addition
to the stuff you normally need. You can read up on it here:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203510

RM 00203.510 Alien Without Work Authorization - Nonwork Need For an SSN

To be issued an SSN for a nonwork purpose, the alien must provide:

Evidence of age, identity and appropriate alien status; and

Documentation from the appropriate government entity explaining the need
for the SSN.

IMPORTANT: The letter must be dated and on letterhead stationery. It
must specifically identify the alien, the nonwork reason for which an
SSN is required, the relevant statute or regulation, and the name and
telephone number of an official to contact so that the information
provided may be verified. It should state that the alien completed all
the requirements to receive the benefit/service except for an SSN

NOTE: The documentation cannot be a generic application, form letter, or
a photocopy.

Verify with the issuing agency that the alien has met all requirements
for the benefit other than providing an SSN.

Having just gone through this whole K3/EAD thing myself, I can tell you that I was unsucessful in getting a SSN without the EAD card. Check out the thread called MSC EAD K3 rollcall - I'm pretty sure no one else on that list has either.
I thought I heard that SSA was no longer issuing SSNs solely for the purpose of getting driver's licenses. If you can get a letter from a governmental agency stating that you need the SSN for non-work reasons, they'll give you a SSN. Michael, correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi there long time....
It depends on the reason you want it?
you can get one for certain reasons...ie some Drivers Lic offices might require it...in which case you get one stamped ...NOT AUTHORISED FOR WORK .
If you need to file joint taxes and your spouse needs a number for you ...you can get a ITIN ...(individual tax identification number)...this is good until you get your EAD and SSN...it is obtained by filing form W 7 at local IRS office.
I don't know of anyother way of getting a SSN unless it is requied by a Gov Agency then you have to get a letter from them to take to SS office.
Hope this helps...
Hope you are well and happy,
Julie

Default My experience at SS office

Hi Michael,

I did read all the things that allow you to apply for non work SS#. I always do my homework. I read and read and make sure I did the right things before I applied for my SS#. The only problem I still don't receive my EAD. But I really need my SS# since I have follow up medical and have to take medication / prescription every month and the company that my husband's working now said if I don't have a SS# by middle July, my accounts will be stop until I get the number.

I went to the SS office twice! Bring my passport, my US ID, the print out from SS site that we can get SS# of non work reason, An ORIGINAL LETTERHEAD letter (sign, phone number, the person name to contact and the reason why I need it) - all in that letter. But well, the lady at the window said "I CANNOT GIVE YOU A NUMBER, HAVE A NICE DAY." Not even look at us!

My husband was so mad. I told him I will never ever want to get inside that SS office anymore. And I got fed up with them.

I even called BCIS 3 times (different officers answered me) - I like compared answers between them because you will see they have variation of explanations. Two said I CAN! YES MA'AM YOU CAN!

I even wrote email to SS website customer service and they replied to me that I CAN and if the person at the window refuse, ask to see the MANAGER.

Well...I'm fed up now. I just wanna wait for my EAD (hopefully by two weeks from now) and go to another SS office to apply. I don't even want to think about my medication. I JUST DON'T CARE.

The truth is I'M FED UP!

Yes it has been a long time & its nice to hear from you again.

Thanks for the info you supplied. It all helps as its all so confusing & hard to believe that the right hand doesnt seem to know what the left hand is doing when dealing with some of these offices. Guess it just gets more confusing the further we get into this doesnt it?

Im sure we are all so aware of not making any mistakes along the way that might slow our progress up as it already takes way too long to get things done.

Thanks again

Yes confusing!!!! Especially when you are given different answers by the people who are all supposed to be working for the same agency!
On the drivers lic site for FL it states you need a SSN...went to the drivers lic office asked them for a letter to take to SS office for number...they said ...well you don't need a SSN for your lic....hmmm errrr oh well!

It really puts me off at times! I can imagine so many poor frustrated people out there not knowing where to go and what to do....but we have to carry on I guess...

keep on keeepin on!!! Julie
