Is SSN from J-1 valid?
I am in the middle of the k-1 application process (it's at NVC) and I have a
question regarding the SSN.
I went to the US in 2001 on a J-1 visa and was issued a Social Security card
with "valid for work only with INS authorization" on it. Does anyone know
whether I will keep this number, or will I have to apply for a new one? I take
it eventually I will get one without the 'authorization' comment but I'm not
sure. If anyone has been through the same experience I would really appreciate
your comments.
Thanks :-)

Hi All,
There is no need to apply for another SSN, it's yours to the grave and beyond.
If you need a new card you can apply for a replacement card once you arrive as a
K-1.
You will need Form SS-5, passport and I-94 showing current K-1 status. You will be
issued the same type card. Probably will want to apply for corrected card after
you are married to reflect your name change. You can apply for an unrestricted
card after you receive your I-551 stamp or card.
Take care,
Mike
