My friend is in the US and received his H1-b visa a couple of days ago. How can he apply
for SSN? The SSN office told him he need another document , form I-688B. Does anybody know
anything about this process?

I-688 is a Temporary Residence Card (see 8CFR, Sect. 211.1(d): http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/c-
gi-bin/folioisa.dll/lawbooks.nfo/query=[jump!3A!278cfrsec2111!27]/doc/{@14236}?) If your
friend has an H1, this wouldn't apply to him. He should go back, and insist on talking to
a supervisor if necessary. He only needs the H1 visa to get a SSN.

When people (non-immigrants) enter United States, immigration officer staples form I-94 to
their passports. Your friend should have it, too... Did he enter the county with a
non-immigrant visa?

Cheers, Riyadh

If your friend entered the US on the H1 visa, you has gotten an I-94 stapled into the
passport. If this was a change of status, the bottom right portion of the I-797
contains an I-94.
