From what I know reading past posts about this is you should get the SS Card before you marry. I have read some who waited after they married & had one heck of a time getting it & some who was told they had to file for AOS then for the SS Card. I dont know if that is accurate but that is what I have read.

Why won't it? There is no requirement for you to even give the
insurance company your SSN.
I remember this issue when someone indicated this to the HR person when
a big company bought our small company about 7 years ago. The big
company is now about 10 or more times the size it was then.
The insurance company created a number for him to use instead of his
SSN. You don't need a SSN to have insurance.

What state do you think you need a SSN number in order to get a driver's
license?
My MIL in on my wife's bank account and doesn't even have a SSN or ITIN.
You can also use an ITIN for bank information and insurance.

There are a number of states that demand an SS#, until recently this was also a requirement of the MVA. However I have now been told that this is not so but alternative proof has to be provided at the test.

I agree...when I put my husband on my policy they asked for his social and I told them he didn't have one. They said, "No problem, call us when you get it" and that was that.

My bank also did not have a problem with adding my husband without a social or ITIN.

I don't know about Maryland but in Indiana, I put my British husband on my bank account without a social security number. They accepted his passport number. Also put him on Blue Cross, Blue Shield insurance. They told me to write a letter explaining everything and would let me know. They accepted him without a number too. Drivers license vary from state to state so I can't comment on that. Now he has his social security number and card so I will contact both places and give them his number. Hope this helps.

I doubt there is such a law. It might be some odd bank policy, but it
wouldn't be the law.

Again.. Many DMV (or equivalent) people don't know the exceptions so
they keep insisting on a SSN.

Did he ask what they could do if you didn't have a SSN because you
aren't eligible for one?
Simply because the standard number someone (company/government agency)
uses is a SSN, that doesn't mean it is a requirement.

Actually, Mrtravel, if you spent your time reading carefully and not trying to be abrasive, you would see that Rete stated that neither the K-1 (now married) or K-2 was entitled to a SSN. I provided proof that they were.

From reading these posts, it is apparent that various banks, insurance companies and DMVs across the country have different policies on whether a SSN in required. In Washington State, a SSN is mandatory when applying for your driver's licence. However, my fiance opened a joint account with just my passport number.

What does this have to do with the K-2 immigrant being entitled?
The SSN issue being discussed is about the child, not the K-1 immigrant.

Generally people state that because that is what they have been told by
the agencies involved until someone forces the agency or business to
admit they made an error or until the individual has given up. Can you
cite the law that shows a SSN is required for the stateof Washington?
Do you need me to post a source stating it isn't required in some cases,
or would you rather just call the local office and ask?

That's my point... All of the information above was about a K-1.
The K-2 child was what I was referring to, hence that is why I asked
what the k-1 info had to do with the k-2.

That's unfortunate. I was able to add my wife to my heath plan and she
had no ssn (they just made up a number to get her into the system). I
don't understand why the plan would require an ssn for this

The Maryland Driver license application
http://mva.state.md.us/OnlineServ/DOCS/DL-011(4-00).pdf does not state
that an SSN is required. See page 4 (I think it is) section titled
"Primary Sources" (two items required)

The list is somewhat confusing but you might be able to use your
passport as a primary source and a utility bill as a secondary source (I
can't tell if you need 2 documents from the primary sources list or one
from primary and one from secondary; you definitely need 2 from the
proof of residence list)

My daughter is on my Health Insurance and does not have an SSN - the insurance broker said that the insurance companies do not in practise require one for minors. I applied for an ITIN for her so that she may be claimed as a deduction on our tax returns.

Actually the word the broker used was dependent - not minor. In NV the rule used to be - although it may have changed that if you did not have an SSN to apply for a Driver's Licence that you could sign an affadavit that you did not have one and they would issue a licence for you. Also I opened a bank account here in the US prior to my being resident here - I opened it as a non-resident and filled out a form to show myself exempt for taxation prposes. All they needed was my passport.
