SS # and Work

My fiance crossed the Windsor/Detroit Border with no problems. The immigration agent
wrote a number on his K-1 and said that will allow you to work as soon as possible.
He went and got his social security number with no problems at all either. Is that
all he needs to work is the Social Security Number? I know everyone is always saying
that an EAD is needed, but then others have been saying that it isnt necesarry. So we
just want to know if the social security card is sufficient to work.
Also after we get married, what is the next step we need to take in the immigration
process? All the websites I have seen have good information up until the wedding
part, then I am not sure what we need to do. We are in NJ and getting married on Sat.
Any help you can give us is appreciated.
Thanks

It sounds like what he got was an EAD stamp in his passport, and if so, then that
plus his SS number IS all that he needs to work during the first 90 days, however
when you file AOS, file for 1-year EAD.

The INS agent writing on number on the K-1 is not sufficient to work. The legend has to have been "stamped" by the agent on the passport that he is work authorized. He is eligible for a social security card without this legend being there as he is a K-1 recipient. He should go to the local INS office and get the temporary 90 day EAD.
The FAQ pages give the what happens. To: http://www.k1faq.com/ and look at section 6.2 It tells you exactly what you need. From there go to Mysterious Brown Envelope at the top of the FAQ page and follow the links to AOS filing experiences and look up the local INS office you will be using. Since you are in the errr Garden State that will be Newark, NJ.
Welcome to the US and best wishes on the upcoming nupitals.

PS have you ordered your forms yet or are you going to d/l from the INS website.

Ok, so the stamp and social security card are sufficient to work. It is still
sufficient if we get married before those 90 days are up correct? I am ordering the
papers for AOS right now. Thanks for your help!
