If he entered on a K3.. he has to wait until he gets his EAD, if he came on a K1.. he should have applied before marriage.. I have heard that if K1's don't apply for a SSN BEFORE they get married.. they lose their "fiancee" contition (doh!).

Not entirely true. My wife received her SSN one month AFTER we were
married and only a few days BEFORE her K-1 visa expired.
I think the SSA is just like drivers license bureaus, each local office
has their own set of rules. ;-)

Each SSA office has the same set of rules. But all SSA employees aren't familiar with what all those rules are.
