Semi OT: Unmarked SS Card

Well, it just occurred to me that now that Reinhard has his I-551 stamp and will be
getting his green-card, he can also apply for the SS card without the "Work
Authorized" etc. legend on it.
So I just turned to him and asked "Do you want to go get a SS Card without that
legend on it?" and he asked me "Why should we? What difference does it make?"
And I thought - Good Question!
So I pose it to you, the people of the newsgroup.
What's the advantage to the card without that legend?
Thanks

For someone like Jim it is a godsend. With the card without a legend he will be able
to work even though he no longer has proof from INS that he is an accepted
unconditional permanent resident of the US.
With the legend he would have to provide a prospective employer proof that he is
eligible to work.

I think I asked the same question once. I can think of nothing other than just
wanting to have one, because you are entitled to it. The nearest office from here is
1 hour away. I aint driving all that way for a stupid card.

Actually there is none really. You have to have some other documentation to go with a
SS Card anyway. Do you know how many people actually look at those cards (or read
them) anyway?

Simple. So you don't have to show an EAD everytime you change jobs. Even if you have
the green card, employers have a right to ask for proof of employment eligibility if
you have that wording on the SS card. Without the wording, they cannot ask.

Rita,
Jim still does need to provide a prospective employer with proof that he is eligible
to work. It's just that without the legend on his SS card the prospective employer
doesn't have the extra reminder of that fact.

Rita,
Right you are - #1 in column C, a Social Security card that does not stating it is
not valid for employment.
Thank you for correcting me.

Yes of course you do. But with the legend you have to show proof of INS approval
to work. Without the legend you only need a driver's license and clean social
security card.
Why do you think it is so easy to get a job here in the US if you are here illegally.
Just buy a phony card from a street vendor, get a driver's license and away you go.
As for looking at and reading the SS card, a prospective employer will definitely
notice the legend if it is there. As will finance companies, etc. when you go for
home mortgages.
Rita
PS Typo ... previous post should have said "Conditonal" not "unconditional"
