Default selective service registration required for N400 ?

I need to bring 'evidence of selective service registration' as one of my requirement
for my naturalization interview.

What is this?

I never encounter it.

Isnt this part of high school thing?

When I got my green card in 1987, I was 19 yrs old.

No you were suppose to register for the Selective Service. If you read the information on the naturalization guide that came with your N-400 you will see it clearly stated there. I believe your interview results will be placed on hold until you register and bring back the proof. All immigrants, legal and illegal, have an obligation to register for the SS up to the age of 26

Every male, between 18 and 26, has to register for Selective Services. This includes
US citizens, Permanent Residents and illegal aliens (sic). It is amazing that you
never heard about it: The brochures are prominently displayed at every post office.
You also can get more information at the Selective Services website:

I see.

I heard of it, but nobody sent me any form.

So I am getting my citizenship in Oct.

Is this a big deal that I never apply for selective service?

You can only register if you are male and between 18 and 26. Selective Services will
not accept registration from males outside of that age range (nor from females). If
you were required to register in the past, but didn't, you can fill out a form on
their website to explain it, and they will send you a letter that can be used for the
N-400 form.

Well, yeah, they are supposed to do that, but with the dysfunctional state INS is in,
I wouldn't rely on it. I guess it was better when you became a PR...

Probably the former. INS is good at hiding the fact that they register you
automatically. In any case, it is a good idea to check on the SSS website, like you
did. Glad that it got resolved pretty quick.

know where my paper work is.

I too am in the process of applying for citizenship. I came to US as a student (F-1)
at the age of 22 and got my green card after my 26th birthday. Now I am 32.

To answer the question 33 of part 10 in N-400, "Are you a male who lived in the
United States at any time between 18th and 26th birthdays in any status _EXCEPT_ as a
lawful nonimmigrant?" I think my answer to taht question is "No" because I came here
as a student. And because of the No answer, I can skip all the following SS
registration question. But in the eligibility worksheet in the N-400 guide, question
10 clearly shows that it does not matter what status a person came into the country
as. He has to register if he is between 18 and 26. I am confused.

Any suggestion what I should do?

Thanks.

Maybe they should bring back the draft and draft snoopy. Oh wait, I forgot that the
draft only applies to men between 18 and 26, not four year old boys who aren't yet
potty trained.

You didn't need to register. Point (e) in this question would apply for you. Until
recently, you actually would have needed this letter from Selective Services. The
N-400 was changed, but apparently the worksheet wasn't. Nowadays, the letter isn't
needed anymore, but of course, having such a letter, stating that you weren't
required to register, doesn't hurt. It actually is very easy to get, just fill out
the form Selective Services has on their website (http://www.sss.gov/), and 2-3 weeks
later you will get the letter.
