You made a photocopy for yourself before sending it to USCIS, right?

I actually ordered two copies. So I sent the USCIS one and kept the other. I'm pretty sure I won't be getting my original back. The wording in the request for evidence seemed to me to suggest that if what I supplied wasn't deemed sufficient the request for a green card would be rejected. Therefore I didn't want to take chances with a photocopy.

Just to issue an update, the USCIS website states that the I-485 has been approved. This is almost 7 months ahead of the anticipated deadline so I am very suprised.

I am thinking that this now means the green card is on its way in the mail.
If I were to leave the USA either for work or holiday how would I return- is the paperwork associated with the h-1b redundant now?

I would not make that assumption. When your status changes to "issued" then it'll be on its way... but it still might take a week or two to arrive.

Do yourself a favor, don't leave until you have the green card in your hand. Is a few weeks really going to make a difference?

I didn't mean to indicate I would be leaving the USA soon- I am not. I am planning to be out for 2 weeks in August for my honeymoon.
