Default Registering address when first arriving in the US

Hi All,

I'm sure I've read (but can't find the link now) that I'm required to register my address once I've arrived in the US and then again within 10 days of every subsequent move.

Does anyone have a link (or can comment) on how exactly go about doing this for the first time and then subsequent times?

Thanks in advance!

They take your address down at POE. Thereafter you must complete an AR-11 every time you move as a non-citizen. Also if your sponsor or joint sponsor moves, they must complete an I-865.

The AR-11 can be filed on-line.

Curiously, no fee is charged for this.

Thanks both - this is very helpful. Was getting a bit worried that i could only find the AR-11 to change address and nothing for a first update. But POE makes sense.

This might be a case of "do it just to make sure". When i arrived i didn't know what apartment i would be in so just put the building and street number. Now i know my apartment number do i need to update?

If you are not yet in the US, no as you have not given them your full address yet at secondary. What visa are you coming into the US with?

Ahhh - I have arrived in the US on an L1 visa.

Doing a bit of chopping and changing in the building i'm in too over the next few days (switching apartments due to logistics)

When we arrived, POE was just temp accommodation (air bnb) until we found somewhere proper.

Once we did, we just updated our details via online ar-11, to amend the temp location to the actual one.

Really think there is no harm updating it, say to add your apartment number when you have it, as soon as you do.

The issue is if you don’t update it, it’s meant to be done within a few days of the move, maybe 10 or so, but I’d double check that to be safe. So if you update it retrospectively after that period passed, questions might be asked. I’d just do it, that stuff can never be too accurate or on time.

Thanks - makes sense. Especially if it can be done online without too much hassle

I was often surprised at how often I would get inquires about the annual registration requirement long after its repeal. Usually the inquiries were from Canadians who vaguely recalled the old public service announcements on the US radio and TV from the broadcasters on the border.

Oops, this one completely missed me by! Looking at the form it requires the previous address - is there a way of finding this if you cannot remember which one would be registered? When we moved over we went to a Hotel or three for a few weeks before moving into our current address (which we will be moving from in a couple of months time).

No, it won't really matter. Just use one that you can remember.
