Default Re-entry doc / requirement for new immigrant after first landing in USA

How long does it take new immigrant to receive the permanent residence
(green) card and social security card once land in USA ?

I, my wife and two small children will be immigrating from Hong Kong
and will arrive in Los Angeles at the end of November 2007.

Is there any minimum date that is required for new immigrant before he/
she can leave the USA after first landing ? What valid document is
needed for new immigrant in order for re-enter the USA ?

Sincerely,

Bill

Oh yeah,
When you enter the US for the first time with your Immigrant Visas, you will go through Secondary Inspection, turn over your envelope to the officer and give a signature and fingerprint for your Green Card production.
Your visas will be endorsed with a stamp valid for one year, and that will be your evidence of Permanent Resident status in lieu of your Green Cards--they will serve the same documentary purpose.

The endorsed visa is valid for international travel/re entry to the US, and there is no minimum time you must spend in the US before departing for short visits out of the US. However, you are then Permanent Residents of the US and must follow the usual guidelines for maintaining that status.

The Green Cards are manufactured in Texas and will be mailed to you within 4 weeks, so have a valid US mailing address (you can give this to the officer at the Point of Entry/airport immigration). The Social Security card *should* arrive in the same period of time.
If 4 weeks pass and no sign of either, you should make an InfoPass appointment through the uscis.gov website and visit your District Office for an update.

Re-entry permit, but only if you stay out for more than 1 year.
