you had a conditional green card but left early before you could get your permanent green card?

You lose* a green card if you do not reside in the USA. They returned to the UK because of ill health. To be able to come and go to the US you need citizenship.

* Unless you supply arms to the Iraqis, in that case you can never relinquish your green card no matter how long you are absent from the USA.

Yes that's right we were not returning to the US so couldn't get the conditions off anyway.
