police certification for immigrant visa from India
I am sponsoring my parents to immigrate from India and the process is at an advanced
stage. I received instructions from the National Visa Center that police
certification is required for them from every place they have lived in for more than
6 months since they were 16! This seems quite incredible considering that for a good
portion of their young age my parents lived in villages. Are they to go personally to
these places to get a police certificate? It is also unlikely they will be able to
get this done by mail.
Is this for real? Has anyone been through this recently. Any short cuts? Can one
get the certification from a central Govt of India place for all localities on has
lived in India?

Your interpretation might be wrong. They want a police clearance from all the places
they lived. These clearances will be provided by the local police of that place.
Nothing to do with Central Government. It is quite easy to obtain but takes a lot of
time because things do not happen overnight in India.
