Default Permanent Resident Card - misspelled name

When i received my PR card, my first name was misspelled. Melaine instead of
Melanie. My INS office is NYC (nightmare office) and so I have been putting off
going there. Anyway, I just looked on the NY INS site and saw that the I-90
should be mailed in, not sent in person. However, you have to send it with the
original P/R card and I am scared to do that as not sure how long it will take
for my new card to arrive/ if I have to leave the country i'll be screwed.
I have just filed for naturalization and am considering just not bothering to
do anything about it. They always seem to look so quickly at the cards in NY
airports anyway so it is probable that they will not even notice. And if they
did, would it cause such a problem? Anyone got any inight/experience of similar
situation??

Hi:

As a practical matter, you've gone long without any problems. Also the naturalization procedure allows you to CHANGE your name in any case. If you wanted to be, say "Margaret" or "Melony" you can do it.

The nature of the error is obvious and the naturalization is the perfect time to fix it.
