Hi,

my mother in law was granted her permanent residency a few months ago after 15 years. She
came in under NACARA, I believe. How long does it take before she gets actual
documentation, (is it a green card?). She wants to travel to her country of origin to see
family she hasn't seen in a long time.

Thanks

It varies; generally it takes 6 to 10 months for the actual Permanent Resident Card to
arrive in the mail.

She is free to travel immediately. All she has to do is to get a permanent resident stamp
in her passport at the INS district office. It is valid for one year and it can be used
for travel, employment, or any other purpose for which she needs evidence of permanent
resident status.
