Paychecks while waiting for work permit?
After filmschool (F-1) my stay got extended for one year of practical training which ended in October. I got married to a USC in September but only now get to mailing off my paperwork.
I am a freelance editor. While I was still on my practical training visa I did a couple of jobs for a client I have not billed him for now. Two jobs only got finished in November, after my work permit had expired.
I need the money from the jobs in order to pay all the application fees. On the other hand I am worried that, if my client writes me checks now, it might look as if I illigally worked while I was waiting for my work permit to arrive.
Is there a solution? Is it okay for me to have paychecks going into my account if the actual job was done before the work permit expired?
If so, what about the projects I continued editing and only finished after my work permit expired? Should I not bill my client for these last jobs before my new work permit hasn't arrived?

Re: Paychecks while waiting for work permit?
USCIS doesn't tack checks.
For the rest, you have to answer truthully to every questions asked in the
immigration forms. If you worked illegally, the fact of cashing a check (or
even of being paid) doesn't change anything.
As this offence is forgiven in the case of a marriage with a USC, I would
advise you to get the money, cash the check and disclose the fact that you
worked without authorization for a short period if USCIS ever asks you such
a question.
